This is a local store that I happened into today. I had been here only once before and was not planning on going there again. Not because of anything to do with the store but because I never thought I would have a need. But as things go, I was stuck with no option today and I must admit, I think I WILL be going back! After checking Hobby Lobby, the Hen House, and having three Wal-Mart employees walk past me as I asked questions, I decided to try Doodle Bugs for some scrapbooking supplies.

When I arrived i was immediately greeted by a very friendly staff member who was eager to answer all the questions I had, despite the fact I came minutes before they were set to close. She helped me find everything I was looking for. I also found some other really cute items such as frames, koozies, and cards. Sure it’s not the place you go to everyday but trust me if you are looking for a unique gift or need small scrapbooking/stationary items this is definitely the place to go!

P.S. Both Hobby Lobby and Wally World had the things I was looking for. However, after the rude workers who would not stop to answer some questions (i.e. different sizes) I decided to leave. Which turned out fine becuase I managed to save a few dollars with Doodle Bugs anyways!

Ahhh and at last we come to everyone’s favorite place for the Big Beer, El Som. Every college kid knows this is by far the best place to get Mexican food in the Boro. Mix a great atmosphere, excellent food, a couple big beers, and good friends and you have the recipe for perfect night out.

As I have made reference to El Som has a full bar for those over the age of 21, and you can get the famous or infamous Big Beer. It comes in a HUGE mug and only costs a few dollars. But there is far mosre to El Sombrero than the bar. Many people can make a meal out of the cheese dip, salsa, and chips for a starter. Then it’s time for the real deal, an entree that ordered in full could feed two easily. A full order will usually run you around ten to eleven bucks but there’s plenty of bang for the buck. 

The El Som on Northside Drive is the location I recommend. There are two other locations in Statesboro but they never seem to be as enjoyable. El Som on Northside deserves a huge kudos and an A+.

The Beaver House at Christmas

On Wednesday afternoon, I went to lucnh at the Beaver House on Main Street with some older family friends. If you have family in town such as parents or grandparents this is a good place to take them. The cutomers here are usually older and the place has a very relexed down home atmosphere comnpared to some of the more rowdy establishments.

As far as athe menu goes it was a country cooking and sweet tea place. The food was served all at one time in large dishes and you serve yourself as if you were at home. You can ask for seconds if you like at no additional charges. If you’re really hungry and would like thirds it comes at a small fee. The food is delicious and the servers are very nice and professional. There were no problems with anything which led to a very enjoyable and relaxed meal. Not to mention, the friends from out of town were impressed. Beaver House deserves a B+ for the excellent service and good menu. My only suggestion could be a little larger healthier selection.

This afternoon I decided to go to Vandy’s in the mall for lunch. Since I have lived in Statesboro for almost three years, I have eaten here numerous times before. Vansy’s has been favorite of the locals for a LONG time, in fact everytime I go in the majority of the customers are middle-aged to elderly. 

The menu isn’t too extensive, with the larger portion just basic coountry cooking,  but what they do offer is great. My personal favorites include a bowl of brunswick stew, BBQ sandwich, chicken finger basket, or a grilled chicken melt always served with a nice cold glass of sweet tea.

As far as BBQ goes in Statesboro, I have not found any better. This is the perfect place if you just want good food at decent prices. The service here is always to par and I have never had a problem with my food. The place is always clean and prices are reasonable. So overall I rate Vandy’s as an A-. The only downfall is the limited selection.

Tonight on my way home my boyfriend and I tried to decide what to do for dinner and we decided pizza and beer, the stuff college diets are made of. Since neither of us like to clean up at home we decided to go to the Pizza Hut on South Main and have a sit down meal rather than ordering. I do have to say that this was quite a mistake.  So let’s explore why.

1. The place was kind of dead seeing as how it is a Thursday night around 7:30 and most of the college crowd has gone home for summer. We were immediately seated at a booth and given our menus. However, the waitress waited like five minutes to take drink orders. The appetizer was another ten minutes wait and they had to substitute because they were out of the taters that we ordered. When the curly fry substitute (not that different, but I had my mind on those taters) came out she brought one cup of ranch for three adults and a kid. When we asked for more we were told that it was an additional .59, a phrase that we heard numerous times.

2. Other than the wait, which could be overlooked, it was very hot! There were flies in the room and then my real deal breaker appeared when our pizza was brought out, a HUGE roach crawled above our heads and down the wall next to us. My boyfriend then proceeded to kill it by stomping it on the floor.

3. After the roach incident I was ready to leave, but we had already ordered and the guys wanted to eat. I figured it couldn’t get much worse. That is until an employee in the back proceeded to throw plastic trays into a large trash can causing things to get rather noisy.

On the plus side, we ordered a “Panormous” pizza, four drinks, appetizer, and family order of bread sticks, throw in the extra $.59 for each additional ranch and marinara for around $32. The average college kid could eat for way less than that.

Overall, Pizza Hut on Main deserves a C. The only really bad thing was the roach but fortunately my friend works for an exterminator and left his information!
